Memes serve as a digital language, allowing complex ideas to be conveyed instantly across linguistic and cultural barriers. This phenomenon echoes Marshall McLuhan's proclamation of the world as a "global village," where memes act as shared cultural touch-points.
But first, a history lesson.
The term "meme" was first coined by British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book "The Selfish Gene." The word is derived from the Greek word "mimema," meaning "something imitated," Dawkins used it to describe an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture.
His intent was to explore the concept of a cultural counterpart to biological genes, emphasizing how ideas and cultural phenomena replicate, mutate, and respond to selective pressures, similarly to biological evolution.
Over time, the concept of memes has evolved (he didn't see the DOGE coming I promise), with the advent of the internet.
Today a meme typically refers to a humorous image, video, piece of text, etc., that is copied (often with slight variations) and spread rapidly by US, the web denizens.
The rise of the internet and social media has drastically accelerated the spread and evolution of memes, making them an integral part of online culture. Memes can provide insight into societal values, current events, and popular culture, often reflecting collective attitudes and emotions.
They have become a way for people to communicate and connect over shared experiences and humor, sometimes transcending linguistic and cultural barriers. But more than this, they are the ‘DNA’ of culture. Internet memes started with Images, then became GIFs in a low bandwidth internet, and today, the prime medium for the expression of remix culture is short-form video memes, or as they are known on the internet, VEMES.
